The Facts About Sedation Dentistry

Posted .

Are you interested in protecting your teeth? If you are, you probably know that you’ll need to set up an appointment with our dentist at least once every six months for a routine checkup. These appointments are extremely important because our team can identify issues before they become too serious—and because they’ll become more serious if they aren’t addressed. Still, while visiting your dentist is important, what can you do if you have dental anxiety?

While you probably understand that sedation dentistry can be useful, would you be surprised to learn that it can be used in a number of treatments? In reality, you could benefit from sedation even if you’re visiting your dentist for a routine visit, such as for a routine cleaning.

Of course, not everyone will need the same type of sedation. Different sedations are stronger than others, meaning our team will consider your sedation options and the severity of your anxiety before making a recommendation. If your anxiety isn’t too severe, we could recommend oral sedation, which is administered in a pill. Generally, oral sedation will help you relax but won’t put you to sleep. Another common type of sedation is nitrous oxide, which is often known as laughing gas. Again, these types of sedation will leave you drowsy but won’t put you to sleep. Stronger sedation can also be administered intravenously.
